Navantia has successfully conducted the first static dive of the S82 ‘Narciso Monturiol’, the second submarine in Spain’s S80-class programme, marking another milestone in the development of the Spanish Navy’s next-generation submarine fleet.
The dive was carried out on Tuesday near the La Algameca Naval Base in Cartagena, in line with the scheduled safety milestones established for the vessel’s trials programme.
The test, conducted by Navantia personnel and the trials crew, aimed to verify the submarine’s hull behaviour, ballast tank flooding system and static stability ahead of future submerged navigation trials.
The S80 programme, which includes four submarines for the Spanish Navy, continues to progress according to schedule. Alongside the S82’s latest milestone, work on the third submarine in the series, the S83 ‘Cosme García’, is also advancing, with three diesel generator sets installed in July. These systems, together with the main electric motor and the anaerobic air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, form the submarine’s propulsion architecture.

The S80-class submarines are designed to enhance Spain’s underwater capabilities while strengthening national technological expertise and industrial independence in submarine development.
