Navantia has marked a key milestone in Spain’s F110 frigate programme with the keel laying of the F113 frigate “Menéndez de Avilés” at its Ferrol shipyard.
The ceremony, led by Admiral Aniceto Rosique, Director General for Armament and Material, alongside Navantia Chairman Ricardo Domínguez, signals the transition of the vessel into a new construction phase. The milestone was achieved seven months ahead of schedule, highlighting strong programme execution and close coordination with the Spanish Ministry of Defence.
With block assembly now underway on slipway 2, work will continue until the vessel’s launch. Meanwhile, progress across the broader F110 programme remains on track, with multiple ships advancing at different construction stages.
The lead ship, F111 “Bonifaz”, is currently afloat and undergoing systems installation and commissioning ahead of sea trials, with delivery expected in 2028. The F112 “Roger de Lauria” has completed its main structure and is being prepared for launch, while early construction work is underway on the F114 “Luis de Córdova”.
The programme is also benefiting from the introduction of Navantia’s new Digital Block Factory, a major modernisation initiative at the Ferrol yard that is set to enhance production efficiency and technological capability.
With four frigates under construction, the F110 programme continues to demonstrate schedule discipline and high technological standards. Designed as multi-role escort vessels, the ships will feature advanced anti-submarine, anti-air and anti-surface warfare capabilities, along with readiness for hybrid and emerging threats.
The programme not only strengthens the operational capabilities of the Spanish Navy but also reinforces Spain’s defence industrial base, supporting innovation, strategic autonomy and future export opportunities.
