Textron Aviation achieved a key milestone in the development of the Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3, the next-generation light jet prototype completed its first flight and is advancing toward certification.
With this milestone, all three aircraft in the next-generation Citation light jet portfolio—the CJ4 Gen3, CJ3 Gen3 and M2 Gen3—have entered flight testing, marking continued progress in the development programme.
The first flight was conducted from Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport. Pilots Steve Helmer and Dave Welbrock focused on validating cockpit software functionality during the nearly two-hour flight. The aircraft reached a maximum altitude of 41,000 feet and a maximum indicated speed of 278 knots.
“This achievement continues the forward momentum of the CJ3 Gen3 program and reflects the discipline, innovation and commitment of this team,” said Chris Hearne, Senior Vice President, Engineering & Programs, Textron Aviation. “Comprehensive flight testing will now begin for this aircraft with rigorous validation of its performance as we continue to work toward FAA certification and entry into service.”
The flight test team confirmed the aircraft’s expected handling qualities and system performance, providing a strong foundation for the next phase of certification activities.
Designed based on customer feedback, the Citation CJ3 Gen3 incorporates Garmin Emergency Autoland integrated with the Garmin G3000 avionics platform, enhancing safety and operational confidence for pilots and passengers.
The aircraft combines advanced flight deck technology with the performance, payload capability and operating efficiency associated with the Cessna Citation family of business jets.
“The Citation CJ3 Gen3 builds on everything customers value about the CJ3 family while incorporating technology they’ve asked for to make flying even more intuitive and confidence-inspiring,” stated Lannie O’Bannion, Senior Vice President, Global Sales & Marketing, Textron Aviation. “From advanced Garmin avionics to a refined cabin experience, this aircraft reflects our commitment to delivering practical innovations for customers.”
