Rajnath Singh, India’s Defence Minister, felicitated the all-women crew of the Indian Army Sailing Vessel (IASV) Triveni for completing the first-ever tri-services circumnavigation sailing expedition, Samudra Pradakshina.
The nine women officers from the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force undertook a 314-day voyage covering approximately 25,500 nautical miles across four oceans, marking a historic milestone in tri-service jointness and women’s empowerment.
During an interaction in New Delhi, the Defence Minister praised the officers’ courage and determination, describing the expedition as a testament to Nari Shakti and a powerful example of synergy among the three Services.
The officers shared that despite the journey’s demanding nature, their commitment to making the nation proud helped them overcome significant physical and mental challenges. Rajnath Singh noted that their achievement reflects how strong resolve and dedication can enable success in the most difficult missions.
Highlighting the broader significance, he stated that the expedition challenges long-held stereotypes about women in demanding military roles, demonstrating that leadership, resilience and capability are not defined by gender.
The expedition met all internationally recognised criteria for circumnavigation, including crossing all meridians of longitude, traversing the Equator twice, crossing the International Date Line and rounding Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. The crew also successfully navigated the Drake Passage, earning membership in the prestigious Cape Horners fraternity.
Beyond its maritime accomplishment, Samudra Pradakshina also served as a platform for defence diplomacy, showcasing India’s maritime heritage, military professionalism and cultural values during port calls across the globe while strengthening ties with friendly nations.
