Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has further strengthened its position in the green maritime segment by emerging as the lowest bidder (L1) for the construction and delivery of a 15-tonne Bollard Pull (BP) Electric Tug for Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP), Kolkata. This achievement reflects GRSE’s growing expertise in competitive bidding and its capability to design and build technologically advanced platforms across both defence and commercial sectors.
The proposed vessel will be approximately 25 metres in length with a beam of 8 metres and will operate entirely on battery-powered propulsion. Designed primarily for harbour assistance and towing operations, the tug will deliver a static ahead bollard pull of 15 tonnes, have an endurance of two hours of continuous operation, and achieve a maximum speed of 9 knots.
Built in compliance with IACS classification standards, the vessel will incorporate advanced battery propulsion technology, significantly reducing emissions and contributing to environmentally sustainable port operations. This project aligns with the global push towards decarbonisation and the increasing adoption of green technologies in the maritime industry.
GRSE has already demonstrated its green shipbuilding capabilities by delivering a zero-emission, fully electric ferry to the Government of West Bengal. Additionally, the shipyard is currently constructing 13 hybrid ferries for the same client. Expanding its global footprint, GRSE is also working on 12 multi-purpose vessels for a German company, including four equipped with green propulsion systems. The company is also in advanced stages of securing a major contract for five Next Generation Corvettes.
With a legacy of delivering 118 warships to the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and friendly foreign nations, the highest by any Indian shipyard, GRSE continues to leverage its strong in-house design capabilities, modern infrastructure, and extensive experience. The shipyard is now steadily diversifying beyond defence into sustainable and future-ready maritime solutions.
This latest development underscores GRSE’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and leadership in the evolving global maritime ecosystem.
