BlackSky Technology Inc. has secured a series of U.S. research and development contracts to develop and deploy mission-critical Gen-3 artificial intelligence solutions aimed at enhancing real-time, space-based tactical intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) operations. The announcement marks a significant step in advancing AI-driven capabilities within classified mission environments.
The contracts focus on strengthening automated target recognition and integrating battle damage detection into BlackSky’s Gen-3 architecture. These capabilities are designed to improve the speed and accuracy of intelligence assessments during live military operations, enabling faster and more informed decision-making.
“BlackSky continues to lead the commercial space-based intelligence industry by deploying proprietary, high-performance AI detection and identification algorithms directly into our customer’s classified mission environment,” said Brian O’Toole, CEO of BlackSky. “Continued U.S. investments across BlackSky’s advanced, purpose-built space-based AI solutions reflect strong alignment between our technical roadmap and the nation’s current and future operational needs.”
He further added, “BlackSky’s commercial AI capabilities are adding machine speed to our customers’ space-based intelligence decision loop, compressing time and increasing the accuracy of strategic and tactical assessments during live operations.”
Under one of the awarded contracts, BlackSky will leverage its proven AI-enabled object detection and identification algorithms to advance space-based automated target recognition within classified operational workflows. In parallel, the company will continue developing AI-enabled battle damage detection analytics as part of its Gen-3 offering, allowing decision-makers to rapidly assess both physical and functional damage inflicted on targets.
BlackSky’s Gen-3 satellite constellation delivers high-resolution imagery at 35-centimeter detail, offering enhanced visual clarity for tactical operations. The improved image quality reduces classification ambiguity and lowers the cognitive load on human analysts by providing precise details of vehicles, maritime vessels, aircraft, and even individual personnel and their shadows. The latest contracts highlight growing demand for AI-enabled space-based intelligence solutions and reinforce BlackSky’s position at the forefront of next-generation ISR technologies.
