Rheinmetall Secures Multi-Million Euro Contract for Bergepanzer 3 Replacement Fleet

by Co Admin

Rheinmetall has secured a significant contract from the Bundeswehr for the delivery of 23 Bergepanzer 3 Büffel armoured recovery vehicles, following budgetary approval by the German Bundestag. The order, valued in the mid-three-digit million-euro range, aims to replenish vehicles previously transferred to Ukraine as part of Germany’s ongoing military support.

The replacement order compensates for the earlier delivery of 21 Bergepanzer 2 and two Bergepanzer 3 recovery vehicles to Ukraine, ensuring the Bundeswehr maintains its operational strength in armoured recovery and support systems.

The vehicles to be delivered are an upgraded and modernised variant, designated as the Bergepanzer 3 A2. These platforms feature obsolescence-cleared components and incorporate state-of-the-art technologies, ensuring long-term operational readiness while building on a proven and reliable system. Rather than introducing new capabilities, the programme focuses on sustaining and enhancing existing operational effectiveness through modernisation.

To meet delivery timelines, Rheinmetall has already initiated production. The first vehicle is scheduled for delivery in December 2027, just 18 months after contract signing, with final deliveries expected by June 2029.

The Bergepanzer 3 remains a critical support asset for mechanised forces, enabling recovery, repair, and maintenance of heavy armoured platforms in operational environments. Designed for long-term service, the upgraded vehicles also provide potential for future enhancements, reinforcing their role in sustaining battlefield readiness.

This contract underscores Rheinmetall’s capability to deliver advanced, future-ready land systems while supporting the Bundeswehr’s long-term operational sustainability and modernisation goals.
