MKE TOLGA SHORAD Showcases Integrated Short-Range Air Defence Capability

by Co Admin

MKE demonstrated its TOLGA Short-Range Air Defence (SHORAD) system during a live-fire event attended by an international delegation from 24 countries, including NATO and Gulf states. The participants included military attachés, official representatives, and civilian observers from nations such as the United States, Lithuania, Egypt, Qatar, and Romania.

The demonstration featured seven operational scenarios involving loitering munitions, drone swarms and fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles. TOLGA successfully neutralised all designated aerial threats, achieving a 100% success rate under realistic operational conditions.

Developed by MKE, the TOLGA SHORAD system is designed as an integrated and modular air defence solution capable of countering a wide range of threats, including unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles and asymmetric aerial targets. Built on the “Effective – Simple – Affordable” philosophy, the system provides scalable and layered protection for modern operational environments.

TOLGA integrates multiple subsystems, including 12.7 mm and 20 mm weapon stations, anti-drone ammunition, GÖKBÖRÜ AESA radar, acoustic detection systems, electro-optical sensors, electronic countermeasure systems and a centralised command and control infrastructure.

The system employs a layered defence approach. In the first layer, threats are detected and engaged using radar, sensors and electronic countermeasures, enabling soft-kill operations at ranges of up to 10 km. When required, the system transitions to hard-kill capabilities using 12.7 mm, 20 mm and 35 mm weapon systems supported by programmable anti-drone ammunition designed to maximise engagement effectiveness.

The 35 mm ammunition provides an engagement range of up to 3,000 metres, while the 20 mm and 12.7 mm variants cover shorter ranges. Additional capabilities include the Dual PMT-76 platform machine gun system integrated on a mobile platform, as well as 7.62 mm fragmented anti-drone ammunition for infantry use against low-altitude threats.

Future enhancements, including the integration of a laser weapon system and ENFAL-17 missile, are expected to further expand TOLGA’s layered air defence capability.

The system’s command and control unit enables centralised management of all components, supporting remote, manual, semi-autonomous and fully autonomous operational modes, allowing rapid adaptation to varying mission requirements.
