Northrop Grumman has announced satellite manufacturer Apex as a collaborator to support development of space-based interceptor (SBI) capabilities for the U.S. Space Force, aimed at strengthening homeland missile defence.
The programme focuses on demonstrating scalable interceptor technologies as part of efforts to build a layered missile defence architecture. The company is leveraging its expertise in missile defence, artificial intelligence and manufacturing to accelerate development and deployment.
Northrop Grumman has completed key ground tests and is on track to deliver on-orbit capability by 2027.
SBIs are designed to intercept threats during flight as part of an integrated defence network. The initiative supports the development of a new layer of missile defence through advanced technologies and industry partnerships.
“We’re combining our advanced missile defense technologies and commercial partnerships to demonstrate next-generation space-based interceptor capabilities in support of our nation’s Golden Dome priorities. We have already completed key ground tests this year and are uniquely positioned with Apex to rapidly accelerate and scale affordable production to defend the homeland,” said Ryan Tintner, vice president and general manager, Northrop Grumman.
“Apex was founded specifically to support proliferated constellations like Golden Dome, which will require satellites to create a decisive defensive advantage for our nation. This partnership will enable operational, constellation-scale space-based missile defense and allow us to rapidly support an urgent need,” stated Ian Cinnamon, chief executive officer and co-founder, Apex.
The company is funding the demonstration of SBI systems as part of a U.S. government competition, building on its investment in missile defence technologies.
Northrop Grumman aims to integrate these capabilities into a broader network of space-based and terrestrial systems to enhance national missile defence readiness.
