Airbus has completed the first flight of the A350-1000ULR, marking a key milestone in the development of its ultra-long-range aircraft designed for non-stop intercontinental travel. The test aircraft flew for over three hours, validating performance and onboard systems.
The variant is being developed for Qantas to enable direct flights from Sydney to New York and London, covering nearly 10,000 nautical miles with flight durations of up to 22 hours. The extended range is achieved through the integration of an additional rear centre fuel tank, enhancing overall aircraft performance.
During the flight, the crew conducted general performance checks and evaluated the new fuel system architecture. The programme now enters a dedicated flight test campaign to certify the modifications, including new cabin cooling and environmental control systems designed for ultra-long-haul operations.
Following certification, the aircraft will be configured to Qantas’ specifications. Additional units are currently in advanced stages of production, supporting the airline’s long-term non-stop travel ambitions under Project Sunrise.
The A350-1000ULR expands the A350 Family’s capabilities, building on improvements in fuel efficiency, emissions reduction and passenger comfort for long-haul travel.
