Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) secured a contract worth ₹1,251 crore from India’s Ministry of Defence for the supply of Ground-Based Mobile Electronic Intelligence Systems (GBMES) to the Indian Army, reinforcing the country’s push to strengthen indigenous defence capabilities.
The GBMES is an advanced, fully indigenous system designed and developed by Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL), Hyderabad, and will be manufactured by BEL. The programme reflects continued collaboration between India’s defence research and production ecosystem to deliver critical operational technologies.
The system is designed to provide comprehensive electronic intelligence by detecting, classifying, and locating a wide range of radar signals. In addition to radar monitoring, GBMES is capable of inter
cepting and analysing communication signals, enabling forces to build a detailed picture of the electromagnetic environment in operational areas.
By integrating these capabilities, the platform significantly enhances situational awareness for field commanders. It is expected to strengthen air defence preparedness by enabling early identification of potential threats and supporting faster decision-making during operations.
The system’s mobile nature allows deployment across diverse terrains, providing flexibility in both tactical and strategic missions. Its networked architecture further enables real-time data sharing, improving coordination across units.
The contract marks another milestone in India’s broader effort to achieve self-reliance in defence manufacturing. With increasing emphasis on indigenous development, programmes such as GBMES are expected to play a key role in modernising the armed forces while reducing dependence on imported systems.
